Drama 1
“Acting is not being emotional, but being able to express emotion” —Kate Reid
Course Description:
In this one semester class, students will have the opportunity to learn and experiment with the basics of communication through performance. Movement, voice and professionalism techniques will be among the things discussed in class, and students will learn how to successfully perform in front of a group of people by doing activities such as improvising, scene performances, and monologues. This course is built to encourage and facilitate group cooperation, creative expression, and self-confidence through beginning acting activities and theatre projects.
Class Rules:
1. Channel The Crazy: Drama has a lot of times when we are allowed to move around, be loud, energetic, and a little bit crazy. We are allowed have those times/activities as long as we save our crazy energy for them and keep it under control during instruction time.
2. Be respectful at all times to all people, places, things, and ideas.
3. Be willing to take risks.
Grades:
Students will be graded on the following:
Late Work Policy:
A 25% deduction may be taken for work turned in late.
*Students with excused absences may turn in work within one week of their absence before it is considered late.
Hall Passes:
Students will be given two hall passes per term. If a student does not have a hall pass, he/she may use the hall pass for 1 participation point. Any hall passes not used by the end of the term may be turned in for 2 participation points each.

Grades:
Students will be graded on the following:
- Assignments (10%): assignments must be neatly written or typed and turned in on time.
- Participation (40%): This is a participation/performance based class. Students will receive 4 participation points each day for participating in activities, discussions, and rehearsals. Participating in theatre requires professionalism, so drama students will be expected to act professionally; points lost in this way may not be made up. Participation points may be lost for breaking rules and behaving unprofessionally. Points will be lost for tardies, unexcused absences, and choosing not to participate. If an absence is excused, participation points may be made up by leading the warm-up in class or participating in another drama related activity that has been approved by Miss Stubbs.
- Tests/Quizzes/Performances (40%): Performances in drama are tests. There will be some written tests/quizzes, but most assessments will be performances. Students are expected to attend class on performance days. If a student absolutely cannot attend, he/she must make arrangements with me to perform at another time and will lose audience points for each performance day missed. Please keep in mind that most performances are done in teams, and if one person misses, every other member of the team suffers.
- Audience Points (10%): Students are required to be respectful and active audience members. They will earn points not only for watching performances, but for providing constructive feedback
- Play Reports: Students are required to see one play per term in this class and complete the play report form for each play. One of these plays must be the school play in November.
